Relevant Learning Environment

Priority / Task 1.5: PLCS graduates will be knowledgeable about behavior, basic finances (balancing a checkbook and use of credit cards), and health issues (nutrition, exercise, and personal hygiene)

November 3, 2008 Update: To educate students about money management, 12th Graders at Pt. Loma High School have been taking a mini-course called “Personal Financial Literacy, the Game of Life” as part of the Economics class for the past several years. This curriculum was compiled by a team of teachers, bankers and even a bankruptcy judge. Beginning this year, the San Diego Unified School District will be the first large, urban district in California to require such a course.

"We the People” Mock Congressional Hearing Team Competition:  In January, 24 eighth graders from Correia Middle School and their humanities teachers, Mrs. Dana Mejias and Ms. Loni Philbrick-Linzmeyer, participated in the "We the People” Mock Congressional Hearing Team Competition.  Team Correia competed against 14 other schools from San Diego County.  In groups of four, students prepared answers to a series of questions dealing with the philosophy of government.  Group members were required to cite examples in history to support their ideas while making their answers relevant to current events.  A panel of judges, which included state Supreme Court members, Elks Club members, and former history teachers, evaluated the students’ presentations.  Recognition was given to the best groups from each school, including a first place plaque to one of Correia’s teams.
