Barnard Elementary School, Correia Middle School, Loma Portal Elementary School, Ocean Beach Elementary School, and Point Loma High School  were named 2014 Star Schools.  Silver Gate Elementary and Sunset View Elementary Schools were named 2013 Scholar Schools. (the list for 2014 is not available yet)  The Honor Roll includes public elementary, middle, and high schools that have been recognized by California’s business community for demonstrating consistent high student academic achievement and making significant progress toward closing achievement gaps among all students.  CBEE has identified a common set of success factors in higher performing honor roll schools and districts. These include high expectations for all students; ongoing collaboration among teachers to improve practice; targeted use of data to pinpoint challenges and monitor progress; continual intervention for struggling students; and mastery of content knowledge and pedagogical practices.  “Star Schools” are those with significant populations of socio-economically disadvantaged students that have shown a significant increase in grade-level proficiency and achievement gap reduction over four years.  “Scholar Schools” are schools that are showing significant academic achievement levels, but do not have a significant socio-economically disadvantaged student population.

Title I Academic Achievement Awards:
Barnard Elementary School  has been selected for a 2013/14 Title I Academic Achievement Award.  To meet the criteria for this distinction, a school must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California's academic content standards.  Additionally, the school's socioeconomically disadvantaged students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years.  "These award recipients prove that with hard work and high expectations, students can overcome challenges and achieve academic success," said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell. "By working together, administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents have raised student achievement and narrowed the achievement gap. I congratulate these schools and everyone who worked hard to make them deserving of this significant award."
