Restorative Practice is a discussion/discipline method rooted in common sense. It focuses on responsibility, relationships, and problem solving. Punitive measures are final resorts. Many parenting classes have approached discipline from this angle. “I get frustrated when you ________,” “I am sad when you __________.” More direct questions are:
--What happened?
--What were you thinking of at the time?
--What have you thought about since?
--Who has been affected by what you did and how?
--What do you need to do to make things right?
Friday School, suspensions and expulsions in schools have not gone away. The hope is that earlier and more effective dialogue will encourage students (children or maybe a husband/wife) to take ownership of the consequences and adapt future behavior appropriately.
