The i21 Classroom
"The Integrated 21st Century (i21) Interactive Classroom is an engaging and personalized learning environment designed to optimize teaching and learning through the interconnected use of mobile computing, audio, visual and formative assessment technologies across the curriculum."
Q: What is i21?
A: Proposition S has funded the upgrade of 7,000 classrooms across the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD). Here in Point Loma, classrooms at grades 2 through 12 are receiving upgrades that include teacher multimedia presentation stations, student netbooks, and access to a variety of digital tools for use with improving student achievement and engagement.
Professional Development (PD) is a critical component of the i21 project. Classroom teachers and support staff receive training on how to use these digital tools to revolutionize how students receive instruction. Professional Development will be provided by both the SDUSD Educational Technology Department and at the cluster level through coordinated PD activities designed to meet the unique needs of our staff and students.

Q: What types of tools are being made available?

Q: When can my child expect to see this equipment?
A: The implementation timeline for the i21 project is organized by grade at the elementary and middle level and subject area at the high school level
- Year 1 (2009-10) – 3rd grade, 6th grade, and high school math classrooms
- Year 2 (2010-11) – 4th grade, 7th grade, and high school English classrooms
- Year 3 (2011-12) – 5th grade, 8th grade, and high school social studies classrooms
- Year 4 (2012-13) – 1st grade, high school subject TBD
- Year 5 (2013-14) – Kindergarten, 2nd grade, and high school subject TBD
Each year i21 installs approximately 20% of the school’s Special Education classrooms.

Q: How is i21 changing education in the Point Loma cluster?
A: The i21 project allows all students in the Point Loma cluster, regardless of the school, to have access to the same technology. Teacher and administrators are incorporating i21 tools into their professional development activities.
Representatives from the ten cluster schools developed a Digital Literacy Committee to create standards designed to make students digitally literate by 8th grade. Cluster administrators are using this document to make sure PD at the cluster level supports the implementation of the i21 program.
Q: Do students take netbooks home?
A: At this time i21 hardware is kept on campus. Dana Middle is one of ten schools participating in a district-wide pilot called Learning On The Go (LOGO) where 6th grade students are issued a netbook for use in the classroom and at home. Internet connectivity is being paid for by a grant from the FCC. Please follow this link for more information on this exciting pilot program.
