Integrating Arts in the Curriculum

Water Environment Research FoundationJanuary 2010 Update:  Dana seminar students have been invited to participate in a truly exciting program through Young Audiences of San Diego and Class-ACT.  Students from Dana and Phnom Penh, Cambodia will learn from each other as they connect through art and cross cultural communication.  For 5 weeks in January, Dana students will work with Staci Birky Greene, a local artist, who will take students from a “found art” sculpture’s concept and creation to exhibition.  We have chosen the theme of “transformation” where the students transform everyday objects otherwise discarded as trash into sculptures.  Students will learn background information on Cambodia in both their language arts and social studies classes, and Cambodian monuments, such as Angkor Wat, Bayan and Pre Rup, will serve as inspiration.  The culminating experience will be an exhibition style fundraiser on February 19, 2010, where students and their guests will share in the sculptures’ display and auction.  All proceeds will be forwarded to the school in Cambodia via Class-ACT.  In order to prepare for our art experience, the seminar teachers need materials such as clean recyclables egg containers, bottle tops, yogurt containers, spools, packing materials, boxes, paper towel rolls, etc.
