Technology

Sept. 24, 2009 Update:  San Diego Unified is installing 1,400 digital “smart boards” in 9th grade math classes and in every 3rd- and 6th-grade classroom in the district this year.  This is part of a broader $348 million technology initiative from Proposition S.  Smart boards allow students to draw on the large screens to do math problems, write, or even make art.  Computerized lessons can be saved and stored in files that can be accessed again and again.  “This is the new chalkboard,” said Darryl LaGace, the district's chief information and technology officer.  “Used to be if a student didn't get something and you erased the chalkboard — it was over.  Now a student can replay that lesson or the lecture notes and read them at their own pace.”
